Tajikistan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed grant agreements totaling 8 million euros for projects aimed at enhancing the water supply system in the city of Bokhtar, the capital of Khatlon province, and the Danghara district in Khatlon province.

The Ministry of Finance of Tajikistan reported that the agreements were signed on December 3 by Minister of Finance Faiziddin Qahhorzoda and the EBRD's Resident Representative in Tajikistan Holger Wiefel.

The projects focus on the construction and modernization of reservoirs, improving the quality of drinking water, disinfection, and ensuring stable water supply for the residents of Bokhtar and Danghara.  This will improve access to clean water for tens of thousands of people.

“These projects are an important step in ensuring high-quality water supply for the residents of Bokhtar and Danghara, which will contribute to improving the living conditions and health of the population,” Mr. Wiefel was quoted as saying.

On December 3, Tajikistan and the European Union also signed an agreement granting about 20 million euros for supporting the green transition in Tajikistan, including agricultural development.

The document was inked in Dushanbe on December 3 by Hokim Kholiqzoda, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis, Head of the EU Delegation to Tajikistan.

The agreement provides a grant of 19.88 million euros, which will be directed towards supporting the green transition in Tajikistan, including through the development of agriculture.

The project will focus on creating a sustainable cotton value chain, one of the country’s key economic sectors.

Earlier, the EU allocated 91 million euros for cooperation with Tajikistan for the period from 2021 to 2024. These funds will be directed toward three key areas: inclusive green and digital economies, human potential development, and the rational use of natural resources.

In 2023, the European Union financed projects in Tajikistan amounting to more than 75 million euros.
