Tajik leader calls on UN for constructive cooperation

Date:

DUSHANBE, September 22, 2010, Asia-Plus — On Tuesday September 21, President Emomali Rahmon met with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on sidelines of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.

According to presidential press service, President Rahmon noted that Tajikistan was interested in expansion of constructive cooperation with the United Nations.

Tajik leader noted that creation of obstacles to Tajikistan-bound freight was an example of unhealthy cooperation in the region and expressed confidence that the United Nations could play more active role in settlement of such problems in the Central Asian region.

Rahmon is convinced that international community will properly estimate such a violation of international shipping rules.

Emomali Rahmon stressed that halting of freight cars bound for Tajikistan was caused by disagreement with Tajikistan’s decision to construct large hydropower plants on its territory and reminded that assessments for the Roghun hydroelectricity project were under way.

During the meeting, Rahmon also mentioned his proposal on making environmental impact assessments for reservoirs in the Central Asian region.

The sides also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.
