DUSHANBE, February 23, 2009, Asia-Plus — Tajik Energy and Industries Minister Gul Sherali held a meeting with chairman of board of Russian state-controlled gas company, Gazprom, Alexei Miller, in Moscow on February 20.
According to information posted on Gazprom’s website, the sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and Gazprom in the oil-and-gas sphere.
They, in particular, considered the progress of implementation of an agreement on main principles underlying the geological survey of the licensed oil and gas fields in Tajikistan signed between the Government of Tajikistan and Gazprom on June 15, 2008.
The two confirmed their interest in further strengthening of mutually beneficial long-term partnership between Tajikistan and Gazprom.
Cooperation between the Tajik government and Gazprom is regulated by a long-term (till 2028) agreement on strategic cooperation in the gas industry signed between Gazprom and Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy in Dushanbe on May 15, 2003 and a memorandum of intent on launching joint Tajik-Russian enterprises of March 28, 2006.
Gazprom has been working in Tajikistan on providing the beginning of geological explorations since July 2006.
Gazprom is the world’s largest gas company basically focused on geological exploration, production, transmission, storage, processing and marketing of gas and other hydrocarbons. The state owns a 50.002 per cent controlling stake in Gazprom. Gazprom owns the world’s largest gas transmission system – the Unified Gas Supply System of Russia stretching for 156.9 thousand kilometers.
