DUSHANBE, December 22, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The World Bank (WB) will continue to provide a budget support to Tajikistan in the future as well, Ms. Chiara Bronchi, WB”s Country Manager for Tajikistan, noted at presentation of the findings of the WB and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) fifth Joint Country Portfolio Performance Review in Dushanbe on December 22.

According to her, the World Bank plans to provide another 40 million U.S. dollars to Tajikistan as budget support within the next two years.  Tajikistan is expected to receive the next budget support grant already in April 2010, Ms. Bronchi added.

We will recall that Tajikistan received the US$20.5 million Third Programmatic Development Policy Grant in June this year.

The Third Programmatic Development Policy Grant is dedicated to help the Government of Tajikistan mitigate the impact of the global economic slowdown and to help it continue to implement its medium-term reform program.  The grant was provided as direct budget support.  It is the third operation in a programmatic sequence that supports the government”s reform program outlined in the Tajikistan first and second poverty reduction strategy. Its development objectives are to improve the environment for private sector development, and to improve overall functioning of the public sector and the delivery of key public services.

WB’s Country Manager also noted today that the World Bank plans to provide 57 million U.S. dollars to Tajikistan in 2010 and 27 million U.S. dollars in 2011.
