DUSHANBE, November 24, 2009, Asia-Plus — Belgian Amabssador to Tajikistan, Mr. Daniel Bertrand, presented the credentials to President Emomali Rahmon today.

Speaking to reporters after the credentials-presenting ceremony, Ambassador Bertrand noted that President Rahmon’s visit to Brussels that was held in February this year gave an impulse to development of relations between Belgium and Tajikistan.

“President Rahmon and I discussed the situation in the Central Asian region and Afghanistan and I am glad that our positions on this issue coincide,” Mr. Bertrand said.

According to him, the Belgian Embassy is beginning preparations for holding of the second Tajik-Belgian business forum in Dushanbe.  “We have good prospects for cooperation in the energy sector, in which my country has great achievements,” Belgian diplomat said.

We will recall that President Rahmon’s visit to Belgium resulted in signing of a number of bilateral cooperation documents, including an agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Belgium-Luxemburg Economic Union (BLEU) on encouragement and mutual protection of investments, an agreement between the governments of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Belgium on avoiding double taxation as well as a memorandum of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
