ISFARA, September 2, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The first session of a joint regional Tajik-Kyrgyz commission for cross-border cooperation has been held in the northern city of Isfara with support from the UNDP field office in Khujand.

The meeting participants included Ms. Muhiba Yoqubov, the chairperson of the Isfara district, Mr. Dastan Khajayev, the chairman of Kyrgyzstan’s Batken district, members of the joint commission, as well as employees of the UNDP country offices in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Mr. Bahrom Fayzulloyev of the UNDP field office in Khujand told Asia-Plus that the meeting had discussed issues related to strengthening and further development of existing cooperation with the local governments and ways of solving the cross-border cooperation problems.

“During the meeting, heads of the border jamoats (communities) of Vorukh, Chorkuh and Surkh in the Isfara district and the border communities of Smarakndak, Aksay and Aktatyr in the Batken district outlined the main range of problems in relations between the border communities and coordinated priorities,” Fayzulloyev said.

The sides discussed the cross-border problems resulting from local conditions as well as prospects of interaction between local authorities and the United Nations Development Program on cross-border cooperation.

“Many problems related to the cross-border cooperation could be solved at the level of communities and the border community heads decided to gather once a month to discuss arising problems,” Fayzulloyev said.
