KHUJAND, July 24, 2009, Asia-Plus — Physicians from South Korea who arrived in Khujand on July 8 for a charitable purpose have not been given an official permission to start free treatment of patients at the local Korean Culture Center, the center chairperson, Ms. Galina Kogai, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
According to her, Korean physicians returned home on July 23. “Visas of 13 physicians and three young specialists, who arrived here to treat people free of charge, expired on July 24, and therefore, they returned home,” Kogai said, noting that all necessary documents were sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health in April already.
“They were waiting for signing of appropriate agreements with these ministries in order to start work,” said she, “People needing medical treatment were coming but they refused to receive them without official permission.”
A group of Korean physicians worked in Khujand last year as well. They were receiving up to 1,000 patients per day, Kogai added.
In the meantime, the Sughd health directorate head Dalil Toshmatov told Asia-Plus today that Korean specialists allegedly did not have appropriate documents certifying their qualification.
