KHUJAND, July 23, 2009, Asia-Plus — More than 18,000 cases of various infectious diseases have been reported in Sughd province over the first six months of this year, the head of the Sughd health directorate Dalil Toshmatov announced at a press conference in Khujand on July 22.
According to him, 41 cases of typhoid have been reported in the province over the report period, which 1.5 times more than in the same period of last year. The worst hit area was the Vorukh jamoat in the Isfara district, where 36 cases of typhoid have been registered in the first half-year 2009. “In January-June 2008, 28 cases of typhoid were reported in the province,” Toshmatov said.
The number of cases of hepatitis A has also increased in northern Tajikistan over the same six-month period. “In January-June 2009, 1,888 cases of hepatitis A have been registered in the province, which is 12 cases more than in the same period of last year,” Toshamtov said, noting that the hepatitis A cases have been registered mainly in Ghonchi, Zafarobod, Spitamen, Istaravshan and Bobojonghafurov districts.
