DUSHANBE, July 22, 2009, Asia-Plus — Four modern equipment for cotton-classing operation, high volume instruments (HVI), have been delivered to Tajikistan, Abdughaffor Rahmonov, the director general of the Tajik-British joint venture, closed-joint-stock company (CJSC) Tajikistan-WIS (Wakefield Inspection Services), said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
According to him, the appliances that have been purchased due to preferential and long-term loan provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be installed in three labs for classifying cotton fiber quality and issuing international standard compliance certificates that were set up by Tajikistan-WIS in Dushanbe, Khatlon’s Bokhtar district and Khujand last year. “The Asian Development bank has given a 1.6 million US dollars loan for 25 years,” Rahmonov said.
We will recall that the Asian Development Bank last year allocated over $2.7 million for introduction of Universal Cotton Grading Standards in Tajikistan and establishment of the mentioned laboratories.
High Volume Instrument (HVI) testing to determine the fiber properties of cotton revolutionized the cotton and textile industries. As its name implies, HVI determines the fiber properties of a bale of cotton more quickly and more accurately than the previous method of evaluating some of those properties by hand classing. The HVI system provides more information about a bale of cotton than the subjective hand classing method.
The laboratories allow determining quality of cotton fiber in accordance with international practice, which allows setting a better price for Tajik cotton on international markets and higher rewards for Tajik farmers.
