KULOB, July 10, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Grain farming units in Khatlon’s Kulob region have produced the first 100,000 tons of wheat by July 9, Abdullo Rajabov, a lead specialist with the Kulob agriculture directorate, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, those 100,000 tons have been produced from 36,875 hectares of farmland.  He noted that the grain harvesting campaign was progressing still in seven of ten districts in the Kulob zone.

“Shuroobod and Baljuvon districts have just started mowing while the mountain district of Khovaling is expected to start reaping by July 20,” Rajabov said.

He further added that farmers in Hamadoni had gathered 83.6 percent of grain areas to this date and Farkhor had harvested 65.9 percent of grain areas.

The highest wheat yields have been reported in the Hamadoni district – 3.15 tons per hectare.

The grain-harvesting campaign is progressing in the Dangahra and Temourmalik districts that are breadbaskets of the region (nearly 50 percent of grain areas of the Kulob zone is in these two districts) as well.  Danghara and Temourmalik have harvested 30 percent of their grain areas so far.

This year, farmers in the Kulob zone have planted grains on 89,000 hectares and they plan to produce 250,000 tons of grains this year.
