Bombing attack at Domodedovo airport may lead to increase in xenophobia in Moscow

DUSHANBE, January 27, 2011, Asia-Plus — A bombing attack at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport, in which some international media outlets have seen “Islamic trace,” may lead panic, frustration, statement by authorities about tough response, and as a result of all that to further increase in xenophobia in Russian society, Tajik political scientist Parviz Mullojonov said in an interview with Asia-Plus today.

He noted that it could be ruled out that ethnic violence similar to that that occurred on Manezhnaya Square in Moscow in December 2010 might recur.

Mullojonov, however, does not link the terrorist act at the Domodedovo airport to the December violence on Manezhnaya Square. “Members of the Imarat Kavkaz organization might be involved in the Domodedovo blast; at least Russian power-wielding structures blame them for the blast. According to them, the blast could be response to a series of successful operations carried out by the government security forces in Dagestan and Ingushetia,” the expert said.

According to him, the Domodedovo airport was a “tasty morsel” for terrorists, because anyone who wanted could enter the airport’s international arrivals hall.
