IRP candidate sure of his victory in parliamentary by-election

DUSHANBE, March 30, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Saidibrohim Nazar nominated by the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) to run in by-election for a seat in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) is sure of his victory.

“The party that has good potential supports me, but my victory is possible only if the voting process is held without government interference and falsifications,” he told Asia-Plus in an interview today.

According to him, they have prepared all necessary documents for registration with the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER).  “In the near future, the IRP will apply to the CCER for an official registration of me as candidate for the by-election,” Nazar said.

He noted that the previous elections in the country had been held wit numerous falsifications.  “All the country’s electoral system requires drastic changes,” said the IRP candidate, “The CCER head has been replaced this year that gives a certain hope.  The new head of the CCER has promised to improve the Commission’s work and we hope that he will keep his promise.”

Asked about the activity of the incumbent parliament, Saidibrohim Nazar noted that he considered it unsatisfactory.

“First of all, I would like to point out non-transparency of parliament’s activity.  Besides, laws are adopted hastily, without thorough discussion of them.  Practically all laws are drafted by the government, while the parliament itself is quite passive,” said the IRP candidate.  “I think it is connected with the fact that our parliament actually remains one-party body.”

The by-election will be held in Dushanbe’s constituency # 4 (Sino district) on May 15 following appointment of Shermuhammad Shohiyon who formerly represented this constituency in the Majlisi Namoyandagon as the CCER chairman.
