Rahmon calls on journalists not to hunt for sensations

DUSHANBE, April 29, 2011, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon has called on journalists to stop hunting for sensations and cover vital problems facing Tajik society.

His criticism came during an address to a meeting of the Public Council of Tajikistan in Dushanbe on April 29.

The president expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that many journalists are interested in covering weddings of princes and princesses rather than in covering vital problems facing Tajik society.

Touched upon a role of media in seeking solution to many serious problems, Emomali Rahmon noted that he was surprised at position of some international media outlets that have continually written about someone’s weddings, “forgetting that there are many global problems that require great attention of media and international community.”

“Some journalists ignore climate change problems, tragedy in Japan, drought problems, increasing fuel and food prices and place reports about weddings of princes and princesses on the first pages of their publications,” Rahmon noted.

He stressed that journalist as member of society was also responsible for its purity and development.
