DUSHANBE, January 9, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Tajik law-enforcement authorities intercepted more than 6,000 kilograms of narcotics in 2008, according to the Drug Control Agency (DCA) statistics based in data provided by the law enforcement agencies.

More than half of it was opiate drugs – 3,381 kilograms, including 1,636 kilograms of heroin and 1,745 kilograms of raw opium.  The totaled also included some 2,700 kilograms of cannabis and 173 kilograms of precursors, according to DCA.

Of the total amount, some 2,700 kilograms of narcotics were seized by police, 1,316 kilograms were seized by the counter narcotics agency, 1,133 kilograms were seized by border guards, 841 kilograms were seized by security officers and 91 kilograms were intercepted by customs officers, the DCA said, noting that little less than 5,270 kilograms of narcotics were intercepted in Tajikistan in 2007.
