KHUJAND, February 25, 2012, Asia-Plus  — Six cases of suicide have been reported in the northern Sughd province this week alone; in two cases, two women who wanted to commit suicide have been saved.

An official source at the Sughd police directorate says a 28-year-old women from the Asht district committed suicide by hanging herself on February 24.

The second suicide case was reported in the Zafarobod district.  Female 11th grade student from the administrative center of the Zafarobod district also committed suicide by hanging her self.

On February 23, resident of the Kansai settlement, A.S., 18, killed himself by hanging.

On the same day, 28-year-old woman from the Mastchoh district committed suicide by hanging herself.

18-year-old woman from the Qalai Baland village in the Istaravshan district, M.S., attempted to kill herself by hanging; fortunately, her parents managed to save her.

Doctors in the Bobojonghafurov district managed to save local 18-year-old woman, P.D., who attempted to commit suicide by taking soporific pills.

According to the statistical data from the Sughd police directorate, 18 suicide cases were reported in the province last month. Men reportedly committed suicide in 8 cases, women committed suicide in 6 cases and minors committed suicide in 4 cases.

It is to be noted that the authorities in northern Tajikistan set up a special group to try to stem an increase in the number of suicides in the area.
