Ruling party’s numbers growing

DUSHANBE, February 2, 2012, Asia-Plus  — Safar Safarov, the first deputy chairman of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), presided over an enlarged meeting of the party board on January 31.

Usmon Solehov, head of the PDP’s public relations department, says the meeting participants included heads of the regional, district and city organizations of the party.  “The meeting reviewed the results of the past year’s work and discussed plans for the current year,” Solehov said.

According to him, more than 25,000 people joined the People’s Democratic Party last year, bringing the total number of the party members to 160,000.

Founded in 1993, the People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan is the biggest political party in Tajikistan.  Its chairman is President Emomali Rahmon.  It is the largest party in the country; the official newspaper of the party is

.  The party controls some 70 percent of seats in the lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of the parliament.
