DUSHANBE, August 25, 2012, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are conducting negotiations on resumption of delivery of Turkmen fuels and electric power to Tajikistan, the Itar-Tass’s Anna Kurbanova reported from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on August 23.

This issue was reportedly discussed during Tajik-Turkmen negotiations in the enlarged format in Ashgabat on August 23.

We will recall that an agreement on delivery of Turkmen electric power to Tajikistan via Uzbek power systems was reached in 2007.  Under this agreement, Turkmenistan was supposed to supply annually 1.2 billion kWh of electric power to Tajikistan in autumn-winter period at the rate of 3 cents per one kWh during five years, but Uzbekistan interrupted Turkmen electricity deliveries to Tajikistan on January 1, 2009.

Meanwhile, Turkmen president reportedly noted during the bilateral meeting with Emomali Rahmon in Ashgabat on August 23 that Turkmenbashi Complex of Oil Refineries (TKNPZ) and Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) could expand cooperation.  According to him, TLNPZ shipped 250,000 tons of oilcoke to TALCO in 2008-2009.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted a two-way trade between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan was growing from year to year.  In 2011, a two-way trade between the two countries amounted to 194 million U.S. dollars.

For his part, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, reportedly noted that TALCO was currently considering the possibility of purchasing annually up to 130,000 tons of oil raw materials and oilcoke from Turkmenistan in 2012-2013.
