DUSHANBE, September 19, 2012 Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon yesterday visited the Vahdat Township, the administrative center of the Shugnan district in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), taking part in the opening of a number of local government offices.

The president’s official website reports the president opened the office of the Center of State Supervision of Pharmaceutical Activity as well as the branches Amonatbonk (Tajikistan’s savings bank) and Tojik Sodirot Bonk (TSB) in Vahdat.

This year alone, Amonatbonk’s branch in the Shugnan district has provided 1.085 million somoni in loans to 136 customers.  Population’s deposits in the bank amount to 1.36 million somoni.

TSB, which is one of Tajikistan’s largest commercial banks, now has nine branches in Gorno Badakhshan.  TSB’s branch in the Shugnan district has reportedly provided 17.76 million somoni in loans to 4,650 customers.  The population’s deposits in TSB amount to 12.35 million somoni.

In the afternoon, Emomali Rahmon visited the border unit, located in Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan.  He attended a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a new administrative building, training center, sports grounds and residential buildings within the unit compound.

On the same day, the project for enhancement of the Khorog water supply was launched.

Yesterday, the president also inaugurated a new clothing factory in Khorog.  This factory has created 200 new jobs and it will sew uniform for servicemen of the power-wielding structures.

Working visit of Rahmon to Gorno Badakhshan is concluding today after his meeting with regional administrators in Khorog, the source said.

We will recall that the Rushan district was the first leg of Rahmon’s visit to Gorno Badakhshan.  In Rushan, he took part in opening of a special boarding school for children with disabilities and the regional boarding school.

While in Rushan, Rahmon also met with teachers and school students.  The president reportedly ordered relevant ministries and agencies to take adequate measures to promote further development of the Rushan district.  Rahmon, in particular, ordered to rehabilitate roads in the district administrative center as soon as possible.  Besides, the head of state ordered to build a small hydropower plant in the Bartang Valley.

Rahmon’s visit to Gorno Badakhshan started weeks after a special operation there by security forces left some 70 people dead.
