DUSHANBE, September 20, 2012, Asia-Plus – On Thursday September 20, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe and Ms. Mariya Shekhova, Director of Nephrology Center at Children Clinical Hospital No. 2 signed a grant contract for “The Project for Improvement of the Medical Equipment of Tajikistan Republican Children Nephrology Center” for the total amount of US$106,548.

Press release issued by Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe says this project will be supported by the Government of Japan in the framework of Japanese Grant Assistance for the Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The Republican Nephrology center is the only medical institute specialized in pediatric kidney disease in Tajikistan, and has been playing a critical role by providing treatment for over 3,000 children with kidney disease annually.  However, most of the existing medical equipment are outdated and in exhausted condition.  A shortage of essential medical equipment is a major obstacle to provide appropriate and prompt medical treatment for children in need.

As an outcome of this project, new medical equipment such as ultrasound scanner, coagulator and other sophisticated medical devices will be installed to the center. The implementation of the project will enable the center to extend their advanced and reliable treatment to more than 3,000 children with kidney disease. The project will certainly support the improvement of their health condition, and ensure their basic human rights to healthy life.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational / medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries. GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  GGP has extended more than US$ 21.4 million for 285 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan since 1996.
