KULOB, October 11, Asia-Plus — The Urban Institute (UI)
Tajikistan
conducted seminars on economically priced technologies of collection of solid domestic waste in Khatlon’s districts of Temourmalik and Baljuvon on October 9-10.
Zafar Mirzoyev, the head of the UI field office for Kulob, told Asia-Plus that the seminars had been conducted in the framework of the “Democratic Local Government and Participation of Citizens”, which has been implemented in many regions of
Tajikistan
since October 1, 2006.
The Urban Institute’s primary strategic task in
Tajikistan
is to assist local governments to improve their effectiveness through training and their responsiveness to citizens by taking more initiative and assuming a leadership role in community-based partnerships.
UI emphasizes information exchange in order to re-orient local attitudes toward local government.
The Urban Institute supports decentralization in
Tajikistan
through a range of support activities to educate and orient a wide array of officials and third sector representatives to basic concepts of local government.
