Tajik president urges to combine efforts to tackle the Aral Sea problems

DUSHANBE, December 4, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon today took part at a panel session dedicated to the Aral Sea problem within the ongoing First Asia-Pacific Water Summit in Beppu, Japan, presidential press service said. 

As the present rotating president of the International Fund for Aral Sea (IFAS), Emomali Rahmon informed those present about efforts taken to tackle the Aral Sea problem.  

The Tajik head of state named ablation of glaciers in the upper reaches of rivers of the Central Asian region, deterioration of water utilization facilities and systems, as well as high birthrate in the region as factors that could worsen the situation in the region.  

President Rahmon expressed satisfaction with preparation of Central Asian Indices to the Asia-Pacific Water Summit Concept that had been recognized as priority and suggested that that document should be translated into a Water Doctrine with specific obligations of countries on financing water sphere and managing natural disasters, presidential press service said.  

Rahmon expressed hope that his proposals made at a plenary session would be seconded and facilitate tackling the Aral Sea problem.   

The First Asia-Pacific Water Summit brought together about 300 people, also including industry leaders and environmental experts, from some 40 countries and territories in the Beppu hot-spring resort in Oita Prefecture.  Under the main theme “Water Security: Leadership and Commitment,” participants will exchange opinions on water shortages, disasters, insufficient infrastructure and governance, and other water-related issues.  A total of 10 panel sessions are being held.
