Uzbekistan closes border with Tajikistan till December 25

DUSHANBE, December 21, Asia-Plus  — The Uzbek authorities have closed its common border with all neighboring countries, including Tajikistan, till December 25, Asia-Plus has learned at the main border directorate of State Committee for National Committee (GKNB). 

The source at the main border directorate said that all border-crossing checkpoints on the Tajik-Uzbek border would be closed for passage till December 25 in connection with presidential election that would be held in Uzbekistan on December 23.  

According to Uzbek border guards, the measures with effect from December 21 have been taken to ensure security during the event.   

The introduced measures do not cover diplomats and representatives of international organizations accredited in Tajikistan.   

Uzbekistan has common border with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the east, with Afghanistan – on the south, with Kazakhstan – on the north and on the west and with Turkmenistan – on the south-west.

A total length of Tajikistan’s common border with Uzbekistan is 1,161 kilometers.
