Asian nations hold expert meeting on anti-drug campaign

DUSHANBE, December 24, Asia-Plus – Representatives of the Asian nations membering the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) held a two-day meeting in Tehran on December 22-23.

Speaking at the meeting, deputy secretary general of the headquarters in charge of anti-drug campaign, Mohammad Reza Jahani said that it is an opportunity to develop cooperation among the Asian nations in campaign against production and trafficking of illicit drugs and share methods to fight infectious diseases.

He said that Iran works to adopt effective measures to fight illicit drugs at national, regional and international levels and it is ready to share experience with CICA member states.

Jahani said that Iranian headquarters in charge of anti-drug campaign has planned to create physical obstacles in the border areas and decrease entry into the country of illicit drugs to help reduce consumption of drugs as an strategy to deal with the ominous phenomenon of drug addiction.

He said that the terrorists backed by drug mafia have increased poppy cultivation in southern Afghanistan.

He said that the Afghan government is not strong enough to stop production of illicit drugs in Afghanistan which requires the international community to take action to hamper the threat posed by illicit drugs against humanity.

Jahani said that campaign against money laundering, and the trans-national organized crime networks needs collective action by the neighboring states.

He said that multi-lateral cooperation in the context of CICA, will help reinforce peace and security in Asia.

Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand and Turkey are CICA member states.

Malaysia, Ukraine and the United States are observers at CICA.
