Barqi Tojik takes measure to ensure Dushanbe’s electricity supply

DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus  — Tajik state-controlled energy company Barqi Tojik (Tajik electric systems) is taking measures to ensure Dushanbe’s electricity supply despite severe energy crisis that has hit the country.

Speaking to journalists in Dushanbe on January 22, the Barqi Tojik Sharifkhon Samiyev said that to ensure the capital city’s electricity supply they will reduce the supply of daily electricity to the Khatlon province and districts subordinate to the center (RRPs) by 1 million kWh.

Besides, for the purpose of ensuring Dushanbe’s electricity supply the supply of daily electricity to the Tajik aluminum smelter will be reduced by 2 million kWh, the Barqi Tojik top manager said.

He expressed hope that residents of the provinces “will understand the present serious situation in the country.”  According to him, new introduced measures will result in the supply of daily electrical power to the provinces being reduced to only three hours – 1.5 hours of electricity in the morning and 1.5 hours in the evening.

Specialists attribute new measures to a decline in the water level the reservoir powering the Norak hydroelectric power station (HPS).  According to them, water level at the Norak reservoir has fallen to critical levels.  Besides, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have also reduced electricity supplies to Tajikistan.  They are not able to able to supply electricity to make up the deficit because unusually cold weather has led to a higher demand for power in those countries.
