National coordination committee discuss AIDS/HIV situation in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, January 25, Asia-Plus  — On Friday January 25, Tajikistan’s National Coordination Committee to Fight AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria held a meeting to discuss the HIV/AIDS situation in the country.

The meeting participants included specialists from the ministries of health, finance, labor, education, a defense, as well as republican and regional AIDS centers, committees on youth and women’s affairs, and NGOs. 

The meeting reviewed the results of monitoring and assessment of the HIV/AIDS situation carried out by the committee’s working groups. 

Speaking at the meeting, director of the Republican AIDS Center, Murodali Rousiyev, briefed those present on the national report on fulfillment of obligations on the UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS that will be submitted for consideration to a special session of the UN General Assembly. 

According to figures provided by the Ministry of Health (MoHH), 339 new cases of HIV were registered in 2007, bringing a total number of HIV sufferers in the country to 1,049.
