KHUJAND, February 19, Asia-Plus — In January 2008, the Sughd province produced a total of 63.8185 million somonis (TJS) worth of industrial goods, according to the Sughd agency for statistics.
Compared to January 2007 the index of the volume of the production of industrial goods amounted to 69.1 percent. “Last month, only Asht, Ghonchi, Isfara, Istaravshan and Shahriston districts exceeded the January 2006 production level,” the source at the Sughd agency for statistics said.
A share of joint ventures operating in the province accounted for 18.3 percent of the volume of industrial goods produced in northern Tajikistan last month.
According to the source, the main reasons for a decline in production of industrial goods in the province are severe electricity shortages, improper use of production capacities, shortage of working assets and raw materials, as well as lack of product market.
In January 2008, 85 enterprises (37.3 percent) of the overall number were not in operation because of lack of raw materials and shortage of electrical power and natural gas.
Mahmoudjon Ibrohimov, the head of the information department within the Khujand mayor’s office, said that of 44 enterprises operating in the city, only Khujandatlas, Kabool Tajik-Textiles, Javoni, MMK, Sirdarya, and Samo work on natural gas and fuel oil.
