Political parties support amendments proposed to the parliamentary election legislation

DUSHANBE, July 9, 2008, Asia-Plus  — The majority political parties of Tajikistan have supported amendments proposed to the laws on elections to the Majlisi Oli (Tajik parliament) and election of members of local legislatures (Majlis).  The amendments having been worked out within the framework of the IFES project to support credible elections in Tajikistan.  

The documents were inked by representatives of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER), Center for Strategic Studies, the Communist Party (CPT), the Democratic Party (DPT), the Islamic Revival Party (IRPT), the Socialist Party (SPT), the Social-Democratic Party (SPDT) and the Party of Economic Reforms in Tajikistan, as well as the National Association of Political Scientists of Tajikistan on July 8.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Agrarian Party (APT), which had also participated in discussion of the amendments, did not attend a ceremony of signing of the documents.  

The draft laws are expected to be submitted for consideration to the parliament in October.  Copies of them will be submitted to president’s office within the next few days.

We will recall the bills requiring amendments to the mentioned laws were prepared by the working group comprising representatives of the officially registered political parties of Tajikistan under support of the IFES Dushanbe Office.
