QURGHON TEPPA/KHUAJND, September 12, 2008, Asia-Plus — Over the first eight months of this year, the Khatlon law enforcement agencies have confiscated 259 unit of illegally possessed weapons from the population, which is 65 unit fewer than in the same period of last year, Jourakhon Madiyev, an official with the Khatlon police directorate, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.
According to him, the totaled included 102 sub-machine-guns Kalashnikov, 43 pistols, 59 carbines, 70 hunting guns, 30 other firearms, and one explosive.
In the meantime, 164 firearms have been confiscated in the northern Sughd province over the same eight-month period, which 79 unit fewer than in January-August 2007.
According to the Sughd police directorate, the totaled included three sub-machine-guns, four pistols, one grenade-launcher, seven rifles and 150 smooth-bore guns
