Sughd ecologists concerned over excess contents of nitrogen, nitrite and phosphate in Syrdarya waters

Date:

KHUJAND, September 15, 2008, Asia-Plus  — A seminar on strategy of promotion of the Protocol of Register of Emissions and Pollutant Transport in Tajikistan was held in Khujand on September 13.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Azamjon Homidov, an official with the Sughd agency for environmental protection, said the Syrdarya River waters are polluted mainly due to wastes of farming units and industrial enterprises.

“The results of surveys have shown that excess contents of nitrogen, nitrite and phosphate are to be observed in the Syrdarya River’s basin in the areas of Chilmahram and the Druzhba Narodov power plant,” said Homidov, “Inconsiderable excess of allowable content of nitrite has also been reported in the area of Khujand.  These contaminations have been caused by dumping of waters from the collection-drainage systems”

According to statistics, 1.167 billion cubic meters of untreated waters were discharged from these collection-drainage networks in 2007, Homidov said, noting that sewage has also been dumped into the river due to ageing infrastructure.
