Iran seeks to encourage dialogue in Georgia-Russia standoff

Date:

The Iranian foreign minister, currently visiting Georgia, said Wednesday that his country is closely following events in the Caucasus and wants Russia and Georgia to consider all possibilities to resolve their standoff.

“We will not be a mediator between Russia and Georgia. However, the discussion of different ideas can contribute to overcoming the crisis in the Caucasus region,” Manouchehr Mottaki was quoted by Iranian news agency ISNA as telling journalists after talks with the Georgian leadership.

Iran is closely following the situation in the “sensitive and important” region, and is aware that any crisis in the Caucasus could have serious and far-reaching consequences, he said.

During last month”s conflict, which began with Georgia”s August 8 attack on South Ossetia, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the Georgian leadership as well as ”foreign interference”, but avoided statements of strong support for Russia.
