KHUJAND, December 1, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Sughd local authorities are seriously concerned over increase in the number of suicide cases in the province.

The coordination council of the Sughd law enforcement agencies held a special meeting on November 29 to discuss this subject.

Speaking at the meeting, Abdurasoul Kholmurodov, an official with the Sughd prosecutor’s office, pointed to the necessity of enlisting the services of media and clerics to study reasons for increase in the number of suicide cases in northern Tajikistan.

The deputy Sughd chief prosecutor, Ms. Muhabbat Urunova, noted that 188 suicide cases have been registered in Sughd over the first ten months of this year, which is 16 cases more than in the same period of last year.

“The most serious situation is in Khujand, Panjakent, Isfara, Istaravshan, Konibodom, Bobojonghafurov, Asht, Ghonchi, Jabborrasulov and Spitamen,” she said, noting that of 188 suicides committed this year, 100 have been committed by young people under 30, including school students.

Jumanazar Rahmatov, specialist with the defense and public order department at president’s office, proposed Sughd mufti, Hoji Husain Mousozoda, to hold meetings with the population explaining that Islam condemns suicide.

The meeting participants also suggested that the center for studying reasons for suicide should be set up in the province.
