DUSHANBE, April 28, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon has held a number of bilateral meetings in Almaty, Kazakhstan on sidelines of the Central Asian water summit.
We will recall that the presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan gathered in Almaty today to discuss water use and other topical issues.
Rahmon has held bilateral meetings with his Kyrgyz and Turkmen counterparts in Almaty today morning.
According to presidential press service, interaction between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in seeking solution to regional problems, including rational use of water-and-energy resources and transportation cooperation, was a major topic of Rahmon’s meeting with Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. The two, in particular, underlined the significance of the Dushanbe-Rasht-Kyrgyz Border road rehabilitation project for expansion of regional economic and trade cooperation.
The road is part of a network in Central Asia that directly links Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. Rahmon and Bakiyev also considered the possibility of construction of a railway link along the Dushanbe-Kyrgyz Border road.
Emomali Rahmon’s meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov focused on issues related to electricity deliveries, production of oil products and primary aluminum as well as rational use of the water-and-energy resources and measures to solve the Aral Sea problems.
