DUSHANBE, July 16, 2009, Asia-Plus — Consumer prices in Tajikistan rose 2.8 percent in January-June this year. The major cause for the increase was significant decrease in production volumes, according to the State Committee for Statistics.
Speaking to reporters in Dushanbe, Chairman of the State Committee for Statistics Mirgand Shabozov noted yesterday that inflation for the first half-year of 2009 stood at 2.8 percent while inflation for the same period of last year stood at 8.3 percent.
According to him, prices of food products rose 2.1 percent in six months to June 30, 2009. Prices of nonfoods and paid services rendered to the population rose over the report period 2.4 and 7.3 percent respectively.
Consumer prices in Tajikistan increased 0.8 percent in June. The June 2009 consume price index (CPI) was 01 percent lower than in June 2008. “In June 2009, prices of food products and nonfoods increased 0.9 and 1.0 percent respectively while prices of paid services rendered to the population decreased 0.2 percent last month,” Mr. Shabozov said.
Gross domestic product (GDP) rose 2.8 percent in the year to June 30, 2009, reaching 7.8266 billion somoni. As of June 30, 2008 GDP amounted to 6.562 billion somoni.
Production of industrial goods declined 13.3 percent and amounted to, as of June 30, 2009, 2.5589 billion somoni.
The State Committee for Statistics attributes decline in production of industrial goods to decrease in production of primary aluminum, which is the main item of Tajik exports.
