DUSHANBE, August 25, 2009, Asia-Plus  — “The Project for the Construction of Irrigation Canal in Childara Village, Childara Jamoat, Tavildara District” and “The Project for the Preparation of the Water Supply System in Shahrinav Village, Tavildara District”, total amount of the project US$ 160,152 have been successfully implemented under Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Project of the Government of Japan, press release issued by the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe said.

On August 26, Mr. Yoshihiro Nakayama, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, and Mr. Himatsho Ghayratov, Chairman of Tavildara District will attend the handover ceremonies in Childara Jamoat and Shahrinaw Village, in Tavildara District.

Through the implementation of the irrigation project, 820 villagers of Childara will have access to irrigated land for agriculture. Improved water delivery system is vital for local agricultural development.  Two Reservoirs and 600 meter water canal have been constructed to irrigate 40 hectares of land for agricultural use.  The Project will assist poverty reduction by extension of irrigated land in the mountainous area. It will also safeguard the concerned area against dry weather and natural disaster to avoid damaging the crops and agricultural activities.

The drinking water project was implemented in Shahrinaw Village.  The village with the population of 430 has been suffering from lack of access to clean drinking water.  Despite its location of just 5.5km away from the center of District, the villagers including 280 students studying at the school, mostly from outside villages, were using non-hygienic water from nearby small channels.  The Grass-roots Project has installed the drinking water line of 7km has along with 12 drinking water intake points.  Since the completion of construction, the improved access to clean water has been assured among local population.

The comprehensive approach to control water resource through the irrigation and drinking water projects will ensure the water security in the mountainous district with the population of 18,000.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries. GGP has extended more than US$ 15.2 million for 231 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
