Kulob Communists call for celebration of 80th anniversary of creation of Tajik SSR

Date:

KULOB, September 29, 2009, Asia-Plus  — A plenum of Communist party’s (CPT) organization in Khatlon’s Kulob zone was held in the city of Kulob on September 28.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the head of the CPT’s organization in Kulob Sharif Safarov said that among other issues, the meeting participants had also considered the necessity and expediency of holding events to mark the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik SSR).

“There ought not to keep silent about or falsify history,” said Safarov, “Why the country marks various holidays even such as pumpkin festival at the highest level while no mention has been made so far about such a historic date as the 80th anniversary of the creation of Tajik SSR.”  According to him, some 9,000 Communists in Kulob have supported the idea of celebrating that anniversary.

Safarov notes that Communist Party is now popular among local youth and more than 270 residents of Kulob have joined the party since the beginning of this year.

“Kulob Communists are actively participating in the political and social life of the region through its 74 representatives in local legislatures – three of them are members of the Khatlon regional legislature (Majlis),” said he.  “We will actively participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.  However, we will not publish the list of our candidates until the very last day because local authorities had made pressure on them in the previous years.”

The Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, also known as the Tajik SSR for short, was one of the 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union.  Tajik SSR was created on December 5, 1929 as a national entity for the Tajik people within the Soviet Union.  It succeeded the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist republic (Tajik ASSR), which had been created on October 14 1924 as part of the predominantly Turkic Uzbek SSR in the process of national delimitation in Soviet Central Asia.  On September 9, 1991, Tajik SSR declared independence from the Soviet Union and was renamed the Republic of Tajikistan..
