DUSHANBE, October 21, 2009, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have not yet reached an agreement on Turkmen electricity deliveries to Tajikistan in autumn-winter 2009-2010 via Uzbek power systems, Deputy Minister of Energy and Industries Mahmadshairf Haqdodov told reporters in Dushanbe on October 20.
According to him, representatives from Barqi Tojik (Tajik electric systems) power holding and Uzbekistan’s power company, Uzbekenergo, are still conducting negotiations on this subject.
Asked about Uzbekistan’s intention to quit Central Asia’s common power system, the deputy minister said that Tajikistan has not received an official notification of that so far.
“Moreover, such an intention, if it is at all, is unrealizable for technical reasons,” said Haqdodov, “The power supply system linking the countries of the region had been created in the Soviet time so that withdrawal from this system may lead to accidents in power systems of both Uzbekistan and other countries of Central Asia.”
It is to be noted that if Uzbekistan quits the system, Tajikistan will not be able to receive Turkmen electricity in the winter period.
