Tajikistan reaches 60 percent of 2009 cotton target

DUSHANBE, October 21, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The cotton-harvesting campaign is progressing in Tajikistan.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), more than 166,000 people, including 18,000 volunteers, worked in cotton fields yesterday.

Khatlon’s Shahritus district now tops cotton-growing districts in the republic in cotton harvesting, reaching 93.1 percent of its cotton target by October 20.  Shahritus is followed by Hamadoni (80 percent), Vose (74 percent) Khuroson (70 percent) districts.

Farmers in the southern Khatlon province have pledged to produce 233,000 tons of raw cotton this year.  They have gathered 147,000 tons of cotton by October 20, which is 65.9 percent of the target. 

Cotton growers of Sughd province have yielded 56,700 kilograms of cotton, which is 52 percent of the target.  Their target is 109,000 tons of cotton.

Cotton-growing farms in districts subordinate to the center (central Tajikistan) have produced 6,230 tons of raw cotton to this day, which is 35.1 percent of their target determined at 17,800 tons of cotton.

The republic has yielded 210,000 tons of cotton by October 20, which comprises 60 percent of this year”s target that has been determined at 350,000 tons of cotton.
