DUSHANBE, November 24, 2009, Asia-Plus — International experts are considering opportunities to strengthen tax service capacity in Tajikistan, Mr. Martin Vizir (phonetically spelled), the Tax Service Capacity Strengthening Project manager, remarked at a roundtable in Dushanbe on November 23.
The project is implemented by the French company, Sofreco, under financial support of the World Bank. According to the project manager, five experts from Sofreco have arrived in Tajikistan to study Tajikistan’s tax system.
“After the study that will last for more than two months, the experts will submit for consideration to the Tajik government recommendations on enhancement of the country’s tax system,” said Mr. Vizir, “The experts are currently conducting consultations with representatives from Tajikistan’s Tax Committee, State Committee for Investments and State-owned Property Management, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, etc.” The experts will also analyze the country’s tax code.
“The main objective of the Tax Service Capacity Strengthening Project is in assisting with working out the strategy of development of the tax system for 2010-2015,” said the project manager. “Tajikistan’s tax system requires serious reforms and donors should be ready to support the process of making extensive changes to the tax system of the country.”
The Tax Service Capacity Strengthening Project includes the following components: building capacity for modern tax collection; strengthening human capital and institutional capacity of the Tax Committee; and building capacity for strategic reform.
