KHOROG, December 2, 2009, Asia-Plus — 25 new cases of HIV infection have been detected in Gorno Badakhshan since the beginning of this year, bringing a total number of HIV sufferers in the region to 128, Mamadgul Ayombekov, the head of the GBAO Resource Center to Fight AIDS, said.
According to him, 95 of the officially registered HIV sufferers in Gorno Badakhshan are injecting drug users (IDUs) and 18 others contracted the infection through sexual contacts. “The cause of the disease in the remaining 15 cases remains unknown,” Ayombekov said.
He added that the majority of the HIV sufferers in the area were people aged 30 to 50.
