DUSHANBE, July 13, 2010, Asia-Plus — Over the first six months of this year, 190 women have committed suicide in Tajikistan, which is two times more than in the same period last year, Ms. Qimmatgl Aliberdiyeva, the first deputy chairperson of the Committee for Family and Women’ Affairs, told reporters in Dushanbe yesterday.
According to her, 34 of those who committed suicide over the report period are minors, while there were only 13 minors among women who committed suicide in January-June 2009.
“The largest number of suicides cases has been reported in Sughd province – 70 cases,” said Aliberdiyeva, “59 cases of suicides among women have been reported in Khatlon province, 33 cases have been reported in Dushanbe, 23 cases in districts subordinate to the center, and 5 cases in Gorno Badakhshan.”
She added that the Committee planned to conduct a survey among women within the next three months and develop and plan of actions to prevent further increase in the number of suicide cases.
