Wheat prices nearly double in northern Tajikistan in four months

KHUJAND, November 12, 2010, Asia-Plus — Over the past four months, wheat prices in Sughd province have nearly doubled as compared with the beginning of the year, according to the Sughd agency for statistics.

The price of one kilogram of wheat at Khujand’s largest bazaar, Panjshanbe, rose from 0.8 somoni in June to 1.50 somoni in October, with similar price rises in other parts of the province, the source at the Sughd agency said.

Flour prices have also risen considerably in the area since the beginning of the year.  According to the source, the price of one kilogram of grade 1 wheat flour fell from 1.44 somoni in January to 1.26 somoni in May but it then rose to 2.43 somoni in October.

In the meantime, the price of a 500-gram loaf of bread has not changed considerably over the report period.  It price rose from 1.00 somoni in January to 1.10 somoni in October.
