Tajikistan, Russia to sign agreement on border cooperation

Date:

DUSHANBE, June 30, 2011, Asia-Plus  — A border cooperation agreement between Tajikistan and Russia will be signed during a state visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Tajikistan.

Head of Russian President’s Office Sergey Naryshkin told journalists this after a meeting with President Emomali Rahmon.

President Emomali Rahmon received Sergey Naryshkin, Head of Russian President’s Office, and Anatoly Serdyukov, Russian Minister of Defense, yesterday afternoon.

According to Naryshkin, preparations for a jubilee summit of heads of state of the CIS nations that will take place in Dushanbe on September 5 were a major topic of the meeting.

Naryshkin said they had also discussed preparation of the state visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Tajikistan that is scheduled for early September.

“The main bilateral documents that will be signed during Medvedev’s visit are the program of economic cooperation between the two countries designed for 2011-2014 and the agreement on border cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia,” the Russian official said.

He noted that a broad range of issues related to military and military-technical cooperation between the two countries had also been discussed.  “I am sure that presence of Russian military base in Tajikistan serves interests of both countries,” Naryshkin said.

He also said that the issue of use of the Ayni airfield by the Russian side had also been considered during the meeting.  “This issue is at the stage of solution.”

After the meeting with the Tajik president, Naryshkin and Serdyukov left Dushanbe for Moscow.
