KUOB/QURGHON TEPPA,, November 5, 2011, Asia-Plus — residents of the southern city of Kulob are displeased with food price hikes ahead of the religious holiday Idi Qurbon, or Eid al-Adha in Arabic (Festival of Sacrifice), which is marked this year on November 6.
One of residents of Kulob told Asia-Plus on November 5 that merchants running shops at local bazaars have unfoundedly raised prices for all food products ahead of the Idi Qurbon holiday.
“Meat that disappeared from shops on November 3 suddenly appeared again on November 4 but at another price,” said he. “Meat prices have risen from 25 to 27 somoni per kilogram and some butchers are even selling meat at 30 somoni per kilogram.”
Prices of other basic food products have also risen on average 10-15 percent.
Meanwhile, a farm fair was held in Kulob on November 5 and local residents could buy meat at that fair at 20 somoni per kilogram. The fair offered local residents other farm products as well. Farmers sold their products at prices 20-30 percent lower than the market prices.
A similar farm fair took place in Qurghon Teppa, the administrative center of Khatlon province as well.
