DUSHANBE, January 7, 2013, Asia-Plus — The Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs under the Government Tajikistan made certain achievements in the sphere of sports last year.
The committee head Maliksho Nematov remarked this at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 7.
“Achievements of Mavzouna Choriyeva (women’s boxing), Rasoul Boqiyev (men’s judo), Dilshod Nazarov (men’s hummer throw) and Yusuf Abdusalomov (free-style wrestling) show that it is possible to produce serious success under not so good conditions for training,” Nematov stressed. 250,000 euros are allocated abroad for an annual program for training of one athlete while the country’s budget can afford to provide only up to 50,000 U.S. dollars for such a program, he said.
Last year, Tajik athletes participated in seventy-seven international competitions, including world championships, the London Olympics and various international tournaments, and they won a total of 406 medals, Nematov noted. A totaled included 106 gold, 117 silver and 183 bronze medals.
According to Nematov, shortage of finance and unwillingness of sponsors to support athletes are the main problems facing the committee and the government.
