DUSHANBE, January 23, 2013, Asia-Plus — Representatives of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) department for elections have recently studied preparedness of the party’s primary organizations in Hisor and Shahrinav districts for the country’s presidential election, set for November this year, an official source at IRP’s head office in Dushanbe told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, they have conducted consultations on preparation of the IRP members for the election as well as the preparation of the IRP representatives for divisional election committees.
Representatives of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) department for elections noted during the meetings that participation in the presidential election was one of the main tasks of the party for this year.
During a meeting with Dushanbe’s youth, IRP leader Muhiddin Kabiri noted that the party would participate in the presidential election and the candidate to run for office would be defined by the party’s congress that would take place in August or September.
Kabiri noted that the candidate, whom the Islamic Revival Party may support, may be member of the IRP or any other political party or even unaffiliated person, the source said.
Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991. It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999. Its official newspaper is
Najot
(Salvation). According to some sources, IRP now has some 25,000-30,000 members. It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.
