16th meeting of TajWSS takes place in Dushanbe on April 19

DUSHANBE, April 18, 2013, Asia-Plus – The 16th Network Meeting of Stakeholder Organizations on Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation (TajWSS) will be held in Dushanbe on April 19.

According to TajWSS, the meeting will provide TajWSS Network with the updates and changes that have been achieved.

The Government of Tajikistan is preparing to host an International High Level Water Forum, planned for August 2013 as a part of the international efforts to celebrate the International Year of Water Cooperation.  The main objective of the Forum is to contribute to the improvement of water cooperation, in particular at trans-boundary level, through advocating the successful policies and best practices, wider public participation, encouragement of policy makers to promote water cooperation at all levels for contribution to achieve the internationally agreed goals on water.

This Forum also gives an opportunity to discuss and develop new measures aimed to accelerate the efforts on achievement of MDGs and recommendations for further actions after 2015 including contribution to development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related with water” reports in the presentation from the Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Resources.

Over the last three months TajWSS network members have worked on setting National Targets on Water and Health under the UNECE/WHO Protocol.  The thematic working group was established by TajWSS Network upon request of the Project on Setting National Targets in the Republic of Tajikistan.

The project is implemented by State Sanitary-Epidemiological Surveillance and funded by Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The aim of the Thematic Working Group is to set and publish national and / or local targets for activities to protect health and well being by improving water management. This includes the protection of water ecosystems, and by preventing, controlling and reducing water-related diseases, through participants agreeing targets.

The results and the summary of the Thematic Working Group will be presented in the presentation of Dr Kholmahmad Nazarov, National Coordinator of the project and Mr. Sami Kamolov – National Project Consultant.

Roudaki and Muminobod – pilot districts of TajWSS Project, have started to use the Single Window mechanism which is aimed at regulating and simplifying the administrative procedures that an applicant has to follow while obtaining a construction permit at the district level. A presentation from Mr. Nouriddin Mullojonov, Chief Architect of Roudaki district will cover the impact of the new system on his work and people’s life.

A Water Safety Plan in Small Scale Water Supply Systems was presented to TajWSS Network members by WHO at the 12th TajWSS Network meeting.  This plan ensures the safety of drinking-water supply through the use of a comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that encompasses all steps in water supply systems, from catchment”s to consumer.  Success story of applying the Water Safety Plan in Panjakent district will be shared by Mr. Amriddin Temurov, Head of Housing department, SES, Panjakent district.

The Network of Stakeholder Organizations on Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation was created on November 12, 2009 aiming at bringing together all interested organizations including governmental structures of Tajikistan, international and local civil society organizations, private sector and media.  Today TajWSS Network provides a platform for more than 60 stakeholder organizations including Policymakers, Investors, Academics and Organizations of the Civic and International Societies.  TajWSS supports the diverse stakeholders in rural drinking water to have access to the process and information necessary to participate effectively in testing and modeling sustainable and effective solutions for the governance, management, operation and maintenance of drinking water supply in rural areas of Tajikistan.  TajWSS Network brings the issue of developing rural water supply and sanitation to researchers and the results of researches to policymakers.
