DUSHANBE, January 15, 2014, Asia-Plus – Kyrgyzstan’s State Border Service reports that commanders of border troops of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will discuss the current situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border today.
Commanders of Kyrgyz and Tajik border troops reportedly had a telephone conversation yesterday following the talks between border representatives of the two countries.
During the conversation, commander of the Kyrgyz border troops brought the issue of escalation of tensions on the mutual border to his Tajik counterpart’s attention.
The Kyrgyz side reportedly pointed to the necessity of solving problems only through negotiations.
“Commander of Tajik border troops, Lieutenant-General Rajabali Rahmonali, has confirmed readiness for solving the situation through negotiations and preventing escalation of tensions on the border,” Kyrgyz border service’s press center noted.
Chefs of border services of the two countries are expected to meet on January 15 for the purpose of developing joint measures to stabilize the situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, Kyrgyz border service’s press center said.
Meanwhile, Kyrgyz media sources report that Kyrgyz Ambassador to Tajikistan Urmat Saralayev will not return to Dushanbe until investigation into the border incident is completed.
Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Ministry reportedly noted that the period for which Kyrgyz ambassador to Tajikistan had been recalled was not defined. “Everything depends on how long the investigation into the cause of the incident will take and whether the guilty persons will be punished,” the Kyrgyz MFA was quoted as saying.
