DUSHANBE, May 26, 2014, Asia-Plus — Shukurjon Zuhurov the speaker of Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament, has called on his Pakistani counterpart Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to speed up implementation of the Central Asia–South Asia Electricity Transmission Project (CASA-1000).

Shukurjon Zuhurov met with Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Speaker of the National Assembly (Pakistan’s lower house of parliament) here Monday afternoon.

Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, says the sides discussed a number of issues related to expansion of bilateral cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries and cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan within the framework of regional and international organizations.

Shukurjon Zuhurov reportedly briefed on the structure and powers of Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament.

“Tajik parliamentary speaker, in particular, noted that parliamentarians of the two countries could play an important role in expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two nations in sectors like energy, transportation and agriculture as well as in establishment of peace and stability in neighboring Afghanistan,” Sultonov said.

According to him, Zuhurov noted that Tajik and Pakistani parliamentarians could also help speed up the implementation of the Central Asia–South Asia Electricity Transmission Project (CASA-1000).

Mr. Sadiq, for his part, reportedly noted that his country was interested in expansion of multi-aspect cooperation with Tajikistan.  

Born on October 17, 1954, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is the 19th and the current and Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.  A native of Lahore, Sadiq is a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz).
