DUSHANBE, May 27, 2014, Asia-Plus – Residents of the Ishkashim district in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) demand the resignation of the local police chief.

An official source at the GBAO regional administration says local residents gathered outside the district administration’s building today demanding the resignation of the chief of the Interior Ministry’s office in the Ishkashim district.

According to him, the Ishkashim police station chief insulted local youth and thereby he provoked outrage of the local population.

“Deputy Interior Minister, Abdullo Navjuvanov, and the presidential adviser on national security, Sherali Khairulloyev, have gone to Ishkashim to find out the circumstances,” the source said.

He added that Ishkashim residents expressed discontent in May 2013 over an incident that involved Suhrob Davlatov, an officer of the border unit deployed in Ishkashim.  In February 2014, Davlatov was sentenced to two years in jail for sexual ties with local underage girl.

Asked about the negotiations between representatives of GBAO civil society and Khorog authorities, the source said: “The negotiation process is going well and we hope for mutual understanding on all points.”
