DUSHANBE, July 17, 2014, Asia-Plus – Tajik Deputy Foreign Minister Nizomiddin Zohidi received UNDP Country Director in Tajikistan Norimasa Shimomura on July 16.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations Development Programme in implementing projects and programs aiming to enhance Tajikistan’s border management capacity and strengthen Tajikistan’s border infrastructure.

Zohidi and Shimomura also exchanged views on cooperation between Tajikistan and UNDP within the framework of the project, Tajikistan-Afghanistan Efficient Border Management and Cross-Border Collaboration, which is being implemented under financial support of the Government of Japan.

The sides reportedly expressed readiness to continue further cooperation on implementation of border management projects.

UNDP has been on the ground in Tajikistan since 1994.  UNDP’s program in the country consequently represents a broad spectrum of activities, within all five practice areas.  UNDP Tajikistan works in partnership with the Government of Tajikistan and plays an active part to harmonize the efforts of all the UN agencies active in the country. The development work of the UN agencies in Tajikistan is regulated by the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).  The UNDAF for Tajikistan consists of four pillars, namely (1) Poverty Reduction and Governance, (2) Food and Nutrition Security, (3) Clean Water, Sustainable Environment and Energy and (4) Quality Basic Services (i.e. health, education and social protection).  Each year, the Government of Tajikistan and UNDP sign an Annual Work Plan, specifying the planned activities for the year.
